Desktop Processors Becoming Less Essential, Say Analysts
Market analysis firm Jon Peddie Research (JPR) has released updated processor shipment figures for the second quarter of 2024. The market shows resilience despite some fluctuations, but the mobile segment continues to claim a larger share from traditional desktop models.
During the first half of 2024, laptop CPUs accounted for 76% of shipments, compared to 72% during the same period last year. This growth was primarily driven by a surge in sales during the second quarter. While specific brand statistics weren't provided, analysts believe the new AI-equipped AMD Ryzen AI processors were a significant factor.
Globally, the processor market has grown by 10.7% this year compared to the last. Server CPU shipments increased by 3.8% from the previous quarter. However, analysts predict a 5% decline in consumer processor shipments for Q4, followed by a gradual recovery. They anticipate that the upcoming AMD Ryzen 9000 and Intel Arrow Lake-S processors will drive future market growth.
"Data centers continue to drive the price-to-earnings ratio of suppliers," JPR noted. "The client PC market is still not on an even keel, and it continues to bounce up and down, but not in a predictable seasonal manner—at least not yet."
