Anbernic Unveils the RG34XX SP: A Nod to a Classic with Fresh Features

Anbernic, a name many of us associate with cool handheld emulators, has just pulled the curtain back on their latest creation: the RG34XX SP. This isn't just another device; it's a clear nod to a beloved classic, and it's packing some new features that could make it a real contender in the handheld scene.

A Familiar Form, Fresh Features

If the RG34XX SP name rings a bell to you, don't worry. It's eerily reminiscent of that clamshell design for the Boy Advance SP. Anbernic had teased earlier that it was working on more devices this year and this one would appear to have been either at or near the top of their priority list, after rumours and leaked speculations started doing the rounds earlier.

While Anbernic is playing games with us not showing the full spec sheet right now (tease, we get it), the reveal video does give some delicious clues. We're seeing rumors of PS1, PSP, and N64 emulation. What does that mean. Well, it pretty much points towards the RG34XX SP using the same Allwinner H700 chipset as its brother, the RG35XX SP. If that's the case, we could be getting 1GB of RAM up front – plenty for running those old games.

More Than Just a Pretty Face (Plate)

The screen shall be a 3.4-inch screen, like in current RG34XX. This suggests we're most certainly looking at a 720 x 480 resolution with a 3:2 aspect ratio – perfect for GBA games, with a beautiful 3x native integer scaling. No stretching of pixels here.

But here's a doozy: the RG34XX SP is rocking dual joysticks. This is a big improvement over the RG35XX SP and looks to be a straight-up response to things like the Miyoo Flip, which also give that dual-stick feel. This might actually open up what types of games feel good to play on this little thing.

Color Choices and What's Next

From what we've seen so far, the RG34XX SP will come with some funky, cool color options: Black, Grey, Indigo, and Yellow. A good range of colors to cater to different tastes.

As for when you can get your hands on one. Anbernic hasn't released a release date yet. But based on them, they won't keep us waiting long. Keep an eye out, as this little retro beast of a device looks like it might be a whole lot of fun.
