Huawei Announces Kunling eKitStor Shield 200 Rugged External SSD
Let's be realistic, sometimes our tech needs to do more than just sitting safely on a desk. If you're in the market for an on-the-go storage option that can handle the bumps, drops, and maybe even the occasional accidental dunk, Huawei just announced something you'll want to take a gander at.
It's called the Kunling eKitStor Shield 200, and it's a rugged external Solid State Drive (SSD). Initially launched in China, this is not your average fragile external drive.
Built Like a Mini Tank
So just how rugged is it. Huawei has equipped this SSD with some heavy armor:
- A metal casing wrapped in a rubberized grip.
- It's designed to be drop-resistant from a height of about 10 feet (about 3 meters).
- Amazingly, Huawei claims it can even withstand being run over by a car up to 2 tons in weight.
- It's rated IP67, meaning it's completely sealed against dust and can withstand being submerged in water briefly.
Basically, whether you're working in the field, traveling hard, or just really accident-prone, this drive is designed to safeguard your data from physical harm.
Fast Transfers When You Need Them
Durability is great, but you'll also need performance. The Kunling eKitStor Shield 200 uses flash storage and connects via a modern USB Type-C connector with the fast USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 standard. This translates to potential data transfer speeds of up to 2GB per second – plenty fast enough for transferring big files like videos or photo albums in a flash, if your device or computer also supports such speeds. Huawei also mentions that the drive features hardware encryption for added data security.
Size, Power, and Price
Despite its rugged design, the Shield 200 is not overly bulky. It weighs in at around 6.3 ounces (or 180 grams) and measures around 4.3 x 2.8 x 0.75 inches (110 x 71 x 19 mm). It uses around 6 watts of power when in use.
Already on sale in China, prices are as follows:
- 1TB version: Around $106 USD
- 2TB version: Around $192 USD
A larger 4TB capacity is in the pipeline but doesn't seem to be on hand yet.
Durability as a priority for external storage, the Huawei Kunling eKitStor Shield 200 is certainly a compelling choice.
