HUAWEI's Giant Leap: Unveiling the MateBook Pro, Their HarmonyOS Laptop Debut

It appears that HUAWEI is at the forefront of the universe of laptops! Aside from their gorgeous foldable screen laptops, they've introduced the MateBook Pro, a standard laptop with a twist – it uses their own HarmonyOS 5. Not a simple software shift, this PC boasts a beautiful OLED screen and heaps of memory housed in a ridiculously thin and light metal frame.

Sleek, Light, and a Pleasure to Behold

Imagine a laptop that is only 13.5 mm thick when it's closed and weighs a mere 970 grams. That's the MateBook Pro in a nutshell. It's absurdly portable. But perhaps the real showstopper is its 14.2-inch OLED display. We're talking about a crisp 3120x2080 resolution, a silky 120Hz refresh rate for silky-smooth graphics, and a dazzling peak brightness of up to 1000 nits. The 3:2 aspect ratio is also a nice touch, offering more vertical space for productivity.

Power and Performance Under the Bonnet

Although HUAWEI isn't announcing the actual processor yet, they've been quite generous with RAM. You can choose to spec the MateBook Pro with either 24GB or a more spacious 32GB of RAM. Storage is achieved through speedy NVMe PCIe SSDs from 512GB all the way up to 2TB. To guarantee cool operation, there is a two-fan system and a large vapor chamber. Capacity is a decent 90 watt-hours, one which HUAWEI claims will last you a day of use – about 10.2 hours according to usual day usage.

Thoughtful Features for Daily Life

The MateBook Pro is loaded with a full-size backlit keyboard (though no number pad, par for the course given the size). Below is a large pressure-sensitive touchpad allowing you to make all sorts of gestures. Privacy is also an absolute concern, with a handy switch on the side to disable the camera, microphones, and location tracking at the click of a button – a very thoughtful touch!

For sound, you've got six speakers, and fingerprint recognition is taken care of by a fingerprint reader. Ports-wise, you've got three USB Type-C (USB 3.2 Gen1) ports, and one of them can deliver super-fast charging at up to 140W.

What Will It Cost You?

This is how the prices are in China, and it's a good idea of what to expect (USD conversions are approximate):

  • 24GB RAM + 512GB SSD: 7999 yuan (around $1110)
  • 32GB RAM + 1TB SSD: 8999 yuan (around $1249)
  • 32GB RAM + 2TB SSD: 10,999 yuan (around $1525)

The HUAWEI MateBook Pro certainly does seem like a solid release, especially with the addition of HarmonyOS. It'll be interesting to see how it holds up and how the ecosystem shakes out
