HUAWEI Unveils nova 14 Series: This Is What's New in Mid-Range Handsets

Along with its latest HarmonyOS desktops, HUAWEI has taken the wraps off its new nova 14 series smartphones. Its mid-range contenders are pulling out all the stops, with the entry-level version boasting a quick screen, a telephoto lens to zoom in on the action, and some very fast charging.

First Up: The HUAWEI nova 14

First Up: The HUAWEI nova 14

Let's take a look at what the regular nova 14 has in store. It's built around a flat 6.7-inch OLED screen. You're getting a lovely 2412x1084 pixel resolution that should be nice and sharp, and it should be very smooth with its 120Hz refresh rate. It gets up to 1100 nits of brightness, which is pretty good. Built into the screen is a 50-megapixel front camera with an f/2.4 aperture, ready for your selfies.

Around the back, there's a triple-camera setup:

  • A 50-megapixel main camera with an RYYB sensor, f/1.9 aperture, and optical image stabilization (OIS) to help keep your photos steady.
  • A 12-megapixel telephoto camera with an RYYB sensor and OIS, offering 3x optical zoom.
  • An 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with a 112-degree field of view for when you want to shoot those broader scenes.

HUAWEI hasn't spilled the beans on the exact processor or how much RAM, but you'll get your choice of either 256GB or 512GB of storage for apps and files. A 5500 mAh battery powers everything, and when it's time to refill, it has fast 100-watt quick charging. Good to know: wireless charging is not in the cards here, but there is an NFC module on board.

How about the price. The 256GB version is priced at 2,699 yuan (around $375), and the 512GB version is priced at 2999 yuan (around $412).

Wait, There's More: Meet the nova 14 Ultra and nova 14 Pro

Wait, There's More: Meet the nova 14 Ultra and nova 14 Pro

The nova 14 saga doesn't end there. HUAWEI also launched the nova 14 Ultra and nova 14 Pro, and these phones are really going all out on their camera capabilities, especially for those who live and breathe selfies. Of course, they also get that ultra-fast charging and premium displays.

The Top Dog: HUAWEI nova 14 Ultra

The nova 14 Ultra is the star of this lineup. It features an enormous 6.81-inch screen with an even greater 2860x1272 pixel resolution. And what about the peak brightness. A massive 5500 nits. This display also has LTPO 3.0 technology, which enables it to dynamically adjust its refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz to balance smoothness and battery life.

For the photography, the Ultra is loaded. It features a multispectral sensor for accurately vivid colors and a five-camera setup:

  • A 50-megapixel main camera with RYYB sensor, OIS, and a variable aperture of f/1.4-f/4.0.
  • A 50-megapixel telephoto camera with a periscope lens design, 3.7x optical zoom, and a whopping 100x digital zoom. It has an f/2.0 aperture and OIS.
  • An ultra-wide-angle 13-megapixel RYYB sensor camera with f/2.2 aperture.
  • A 50-megapixel front-facing selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture.
  • And a secondary front-facing 8-megapixel telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom for those close-up self-portraits.

This device runs HarmonyOS 5 and also comes in storage options of 256GB, 512GB, or even 1TB. It's also fueled by the same 5500 mAh battery with 100W fast charging. HUAWEI says that even 5 minutes of charging can give you 5.3 hours of video playback juice.

Other neat features on the Ultra include an NFC module, an infrared port (meaning you can use it as a remote for your devices), and a fingerprint reader integrated into the power button. The USB Type-C port is USB 2.0 standard but does have IP69 water protection, which is excellent peace of mind.

A Closer Look at the HUAWEI nova 14 Pro

The 14 Pro shares much with the Ultra but also has some discrepancies. The display is slightly smaller at 6.78 inches, and the maximum brightness is 1200 nits. The rear telephoto camera is a 12-megapixel sensor with 3x optical zoom, while the ultra-wide is an 8-megapixel shooter. The front camera arrangement is, however, the same as the Ultra model. Most other specs fall in place, but water resistance is not officially mentioned for the Pro model.

Time to talk pricing for these premium models in China: The HUAWEI nova 14 Ultra starts at 4199 yuan (around $582) for the 256GB version up to 4999 yuan (around $695) for the 1TB version. The HUAWEI nova 14 Pro starts at 3499 yuan (around $485) for 256GB up to 3799 yuan (around $527) for the 512GB version.
