Mortal Kombat 1 Content Development Concludes as NetherRealm Eyes New Project
Expectations must now dim a little more with hopes of new story chapters or faces added to the roster of Mortal Kombat 1. The development team working at NetherRealm Studios has made it clear: Mortal Kombat 1 content is closing down.
No More New Fighters or Story Beats
It seems this shift was foreseen by the recent announcement of Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, which bundles up all the DLC released since the game's launch on September 2023. Now an official word from the Mortal Kombat team has confirmed that while bug-fixing and balance tweaks will go on they are not going to be expanding the story or adding new downloadable characters.
We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.

New Horizons for NetherRealm
So, what made the change in direction. Apparently, the studio is now looking ahead to some new unannounced project. NetherRealm intend to pour all their creative energy into this next venture. What will it be. Buzz is around an installment within the Injustice series, but that is as yet speculation.
This translates to Mortal Kombat 1 fans knowing that what they have is pretty much complete. A little bittersweet, almost, to know that the main journey is now over, but it does bring excitement for whatever NetherRealm might have in store next.
