The U.S. Justice team is looking into Google's big plan to buy a cybersecurity firm called Wiz for $32 billion. They worry it could hurt competition. This buy would be the biggest one yet for Google's parent company, Alphabet.
Google wants to add Wiz to its cloud team to improve security and help firms handle big online threats.
So far, Google and the Justice people won't talk about this check. Wiz hasn't said anything yet, either.
Talk of this buy began after President Donald Trump came into power, hoping for easy antitrust rules. Wiz's leaders were careful, especially after seeing Adobe fail to buy Figma for $20 billion due to similar issues in late 2023.
If the deal fails, Google might have to pay Wiz over $3.2 billion. Changes in key government roles under Trump might have made these firms hope for less trouble with their plans.
This check is happening while Google fights other legal battles about its control over online search and ads. A U.S. judge just said Google did break rules to keep its power in ad tech areas.
