Atari Says It's Set to Buy Big Part in Thunderful Group
Atari plans to buy a main part in Thunderful Group, a Swedish firm known for its hit SteamWorld games. The deal means Atari will put in a lot of money and comes as Thunderful is making big changes, which includes firing some staff.
What the Deal Looks Like
The deal has Atari putting in 50 million SEK (about €4.5 million) by buying new shares. This will give Atari about 82.6% of Thunderful, making it the main owner. Still, Thunderful's other owners must okay this deal with a big vote on August 28.
Thunderful's Big Changes
Along with the deal news, Thunderful said it is cutting costs and wants to save more money. They aim to make a profit even if they make less money. But, sadly, this means they have to let go of people in their game making and selling teams.
These changes will keep going even after Atari takes over. Patrick Svensk, the boss at Thunderful, said, "It's sad to have to make these hard choices that hit our workers. But I am sure it's the right way for Thunderful to be a smart firm in the game selling world while keeping our game roll-out plan safe."
A New Way for Atari
This buy looks like Atari is trying something new. Until now, Atari was all about old-school games, buying groups like Digital Eclipse and Nightdive Studios. With Thunderful, Atari might be starting to look at more new types of games. This could be a new path for the well-known gaming brand, and it's worth keeping an eye on what they do next.
