Pixel 10 Pro to Use 480Hz PWM Screen to Cut Eye Stress

Google plans to bring Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) screen tech to its new Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL for the first time. A report from Android Authority says these top models will have 480Hz PWM screens, a tech made to cut down on eye stress, headaches, and sleep trouble from using a smartphone. But, this tech is still far behind the high levels some rivals offer.

What the 480Hz PWM Feature Does

It's key to know PWM rate is not the same as screen refresh rate. A high refresh rate (like 120Hz) makes moves and scrolling look smooth. A high PWM rate, though, cuts screen light by making the screen flicker fast – so fast it's hard to see – which cuts the main flicker that can tire the eyes after a lot of use.

How the Pixel 10 Pro Stacks up to Rivals

Even though Google's step to add a 480Hz PWM screen is forward, it's much lower than other brand's top models. For example:

  • The OnePlus 13 has a 2,160Hz PWM rate.
  • The Honor Magic 7 Pro has a 4,320Hz PWM screen.

This puts Google's new top phones at a big lower spot for this screen spec.

Why Pick a 480Hz PWM Rate

The choice of 480Hz PWM rate isn't random. It comes from tech and cost matters. The screen's driver IC matters a lot, with more high-end, costly parts able to handle higher PWM rates.

Also, there's a give and take in tech. More PWM can mean less control over how many light levels there are and might mess with color tone and how light is seen. Firms like Google have to weigh cutting flicker against keeping exact color and light.

How Users See It and Where to Get It

Not all users will see the good in a higher PWM rate; some are more open to screen flicker than others. Even though it's a move forward, the 480Hz rate might not seem better for all.

The report also hints this better screen will only be on the Pro models. The normal Pixel 10 models might not get this 480Hz PWM screen, and might have a lower rate or miss the tech fully.
