Reports Say TSMC's 2nm Arizona Factory is Moving Fast

Sources from Taiwan's supply chain hint that TSMC will pick building partners for its third Arizona chip plant by year's end. This news shows the work may be quicker than first thought. This plant is big for TSMC's Arizona site and will make top 2-nanometer chips.

TSMC's Bigger Arizona Plan

With a CHIPS Act file and a $65 billion fund, TSMC plans a three-plant site in Arizona. The first plant is up and makes 4-nanometer chips for big names like Apple and NVIDIA. The second spot, for 3-nanometer items, just started.

The third plant, called P3, was to start making 2-nanometer chips by decade's end. Yet, new info points to a much faster pace. Builders, learning from the first two spots, might finish in just a year. This could mean the plant's done by end of 2026, with making maybe starting in 2027.

A big help in speed is TSMC's supply chain partners for pipes, electric gear, and other needs already have U.S. licenses, making building faster.

The Race Samsung's 2nm Hurdle

As TSMC speeds up in Arizona, its main rival, Samsung, is facing its own tech hurdles. After poor results with its 3nm tech, Samsung now focuses on its 2nm tech to win back clients like Qualcomm, even putting off its 1.4nm work.

Samsung’s current 2nm results are about 30 percent. The aim is to reach 60-70 percent by year's end, with full-scale work planned for mid-2025. Despite some talks, new info shows Qualcomm still makes its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 chips on Samsung's 2nm tech.

To catch up, Samsung has finished the main design for its next-gen 2nm node and plans a third-gen version, SF2P+, in two years. Yet, whether this works depends fully on getting customer orders.
