AMD Zen 7 CPU Compatibility With AM5 Socket Tipped for Long-Term Upgrades and Future 32-Core Chips

AMD Zen 7 Chips Might Work With Old AM5 Socket

New tips say AMD's next Zen 7 set-up, set to come out by 2028, will work with the AM5 socket we have now. This choice will let the platform last into a fifth chip style and could handle top chips with up to 32 cores and 64 threads.

Keeping the AM5 Going

Sources tell us that AMD's plan to use AM5 for Zen 7 was picked recently. This follows the late 2023 news that AMD would stick with the socket to "2025 and more." The AM5 is set to support Zen 3, Zen 4, and soon, Zen 5. Zen 6, coming in 2026, will also fit AM5.

If Zen 7 sticks with this, AM5 could be one of the most lasting modern CPU holders, which means a long run of upgrades for users. This move lines up against Intel's talk of their LGA 1954 socket holding 3-4 chip styles.

What Zen 7 Might Look Like

Leaks say top Zen 7 CPUs will have two chip parts (CCD). Each part will have 16 cores, so top ones will have 32 cores and 64 threads. This means you could pop a 32-core new chip into an old board.

Moving from Zen 6 to Zen 7

Zen 6, called "Olympic Ridge," will set the scene for Zen 7. Zen 6 will bring a better IO part than the ones in Zen 4 and Zen 5, for faster memory and more connection ways.

Zen 7 will build on this with more cores, faster speed, and new connect ways. This means going from Zen 6 to Zen 7 on an AM5 board will really boost how well things run.
