The Montage C6P: A New Look at Intel's Chips for China

China's own chip maker, Montage Technology, has just put out its new C6P chip line for servers. Though these are named new, Intel's top-level Granite Rapids "Xeon 6P" tech has been put in them, but redone for China's market needs. This keeps up the long link that lets Intel's tech grow with a local name.

What Is the Montage C6P CPU

The C6P chips are Montage's 6th try at the Jintai Performance Core CPU. These chips hold the same tech as Intel's Xeon 6700P chips, with the high-end Redwood Cove P-Core build also used in Meteor Lake CPUs. Key points are:

  • Core Count: Up to 86 cores and 172 threads.
  • Cache: A big 336 MB of L3 cache.
  • Memory Help: 8-line DDR5 memory, letting speeds reach up to 6400 MT/s (RDIMMs) and 8000 MT/s (MRDIMMs).
  • Links: Up to 88 PCIe 5.0 lanes with CXL 2.0 back up.
  • Links between: Four UPI links that run at up to 24 GT/s for two-socket set ups.

Not yet putting out Intel's top 128-core Xeon 6900P, Montage focuses on the strong 86-core kind.

The Game Plan: Linking for Market Reach

This new name is more than a small change; it's a key move. The link helps Intel get around the China server market, which likes local tech makers more because of rules or what big firms want. By using the Montage name, the tech is easier to get and ok for a big part of the market.

This plan helps both: Montage bumps up its group with top tech, and Intel keeps a big spot in China. The head of Montage stated that the C6P "gives buyers a less costly choice through safe parts and tuned up performance."

Easy Upgrades and No Breaks in Ecosystem

A big plus for past buyers is the easy way to upgrade. The C6P chips fit with older kinds like Sierra Forest (and Montage's own). This lets data spots swap to new chips with no need for big changes, saving time and money.

Keeping the known x86 build, Montage makes sure buyers can keep their old software and growing setups with no breaks, speeding up tech changes in key fields.
