PCI-SIG Sets Final PCI Express 8.0 Specs for Better Data Move
The PCI-SIG has now set the specs for PCI Express (PCIe) 8.0, a new rule that aims to make data move twice as fast as before. This spec aims for a rate of 256.0 GT/s and will be given to PCI-SIG members by 2028.
Key Goals of the PCIe 8.0 Specification
From the news, PCI-SIG's tech teams are making the PCIe 8.0 spec with these big goals:
- Hitting a 256.0 GT/s rate, giving up to 1 TB/s of two-way data move in a x16 set up.
- Keeping it work with all past PCIe techs.
- Making new ways to use the full speed.
- Working to use less power.
- Looking at new plug tech to hold the fast speeds.
- Making sure delay, Error Fixing, and trust in the data are good.
Effects on Industry and Future Uses
Al Yanes, head of PCI-SIG, shared, “After this year’s start of the PCIe 7.0 spec, we are happy to share that the PCIe 8.0 will push the data rate up to 256 GT/s, keeping our three-year pace of doubling the speed for new tech uses.”
The PCIe 8.0 is made for data-heavy fields and new uses, like:
- AI and Machine Learning
- Top-Level Data Work
- Big Data Centers
- Fast Networking
- Edge and Quantum Work
- Cars and Military/Space fields
Reece Hayden, top expert at ABI Research, talked about the ongoing need for the tech. “Data center nets are right now getting ready to use PCIe 6.0 tech and are keen on PCIe 7.0. The start of PCIe 8.0 will help the industry's need for speed for years to come,” said Hayden.
