Massive 6-Gigawatt AI Infrastructure for AMD and OpenAI Strategic Partnership
AMD and OpenAI have entered into a collaboration strategy concerning OpenAI's next-generation AI infrastructure. This aims at deploying computing capacity of up to 6 gigawatts using several generations of AMD Instinct GPUs, which are predicted to produce revenue in tens of billions for AMD.
Initial Deployment Next-Gen AMD Instinct MI450
The partnership will commence in the second half of 2026 with the initial 1-gigawatt deployment featuring AMD's upcoming Instinct MI450 GPUs. This next-generation accelerator is part of the MI400 series and is expected to deliver significant performance gains.
Important specifications pertinent to the MI400 series accelerators include:
- AI Compute: Up to 40 PFLOPs
- Memory: 432 GB of HBM4
- Bandwidth: 19.6 TB/s
The complete 6-gigawatt infrastructure will also feature other Instinct AI accelerators, including the existing MI300 and MI350 series, creating AMD's core strategic compute partner for OpenAI.
Details of the Strategic Agreement
This further deepens the existing hardware and software relationship between the two companies. Consequently, following the agreement, AMD issued this warrant to OpenAI concerning up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock. Vesting involves qualifying benchmarks such as the initial 1-gigawatt deployment, scaling up to 6 gigawatts in total, and AMD hitting certain share-price targets.
Dr. Lisa Su, AMD chair and CEO has said.
"We're excited to partner with OpenAI delivering AI compute at massive scale. The best of AMD and OpenAI come together here to create a true win-win."
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO, OpenAI stated,
"This partnership represents a significant stepping stone in building the compute capacity that is going to be needed to realize the full potential of AI. AMD's leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress."
Financial and Ecosystem Impact
The two companies view the partnership as a very important financial and strategic win. "This is expected to deliver tens of billions of dollars in revenues for AMD while accelerating OpenAI's AI infrastructure buildout," a statement by Jean Hu, AMD EVP and CFO, noted. The partnership is intended to meet the increasing global demands of AI while combining AMD's high-performance computing technology with OpenAI's research leadership.
