Halo Combat Evolved is Being Remade as Halo Campaign Evolved, Coming to PS5
After years of speculation, the remake of Halo Combat Evolved campaign has been announced. The project is being described by Halo Studios and Xbox as "a faithful yet modernized remake." In what is possibly a major shift in the franchise, it is expected to launch in 2026 on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5.
A Modern Overhaul in Unreal Engine 5
This remake indicates a big technical departure for the series. For this project, Halo Studios (formerly 343 Studios) has opted to work with Unreal Engine 5, countering all conventions of using its proprietary Slipspace Engine. This means the entire game-from assets to models to environments-has been redesigned to capitalize on this engine's best capabilities.
New Content and Co-Op Features
While Halo Campaign Evolved keeps the main narrative of the Combat Evolved campaign constant, several new features are being added:
- New Prequel Missions: 3 entirely new bonus missions have been added to serve as a prequel set-up to the main campaign.
- Four-Player Online Co-Op: Play with up to four players online through the entire campaign.
- Two-Player Couch Co-op: The remake also gives couch co-op, splitting the screen for two players.
What's Missing No Multiplayer
Halo Campaign Evolved is single-player and co-op campaign only. The original multiplayer component is gone from the remake. Anyone bent on reliving Halo CE multiplayer must jump back into Master Chief Collection.
Gameplay Showcase and the Halo Feel
A 13-minute gameplay showcase typified by the iconic level "The Silent Cartographer" was put out alongside the announcement. While the visual upgrade is impressive, a critical question that remains would be how the game feels to play in Unreal Engine 5 compared to the engine defining Halo's trademark gunplay. This transition will pique the interest of long-time fans.
Availability
No set date has been decided, except for the 2026 release window; however, Halo Campaign Evolved can be wish-listed on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
