Renesas Announces Industry-First Gen6 DDR5 RCD Reaching 9600 MT/s

Renesas Electronics Corporation has launched the industry's first sixth-generation Registered Clock Driver (RCD) for DDR5 Registered Dual In-line Memory Modules (RDIMMs). With a data rate of 9600 Mega Transfers Per Second (MT/s), this new component establishes a new speed standard for memory interface.

Key Features of the Renesas Gen6 DDR5 RCD

This new RCD is designed to sustain an escalation of memory bandwidth requirements in AI, High-Performance Compute (HPC), and other data center applications. Its key features include:

  • Increased Bandwidth: The upgrade to 9600 MT/s constitutes a 10% improvement in bandwidth over that of the incumbent Gen5 RCD, which supported a data rate of 8800 MT/s.
  • Backward Compatibility: It is Gen5 platform-compatible, presenting an upgrade path without any hurdles.
  • Better Performance: Enhanced signal integrity and power efficiency requirements that sustain demanding AI and Large Language Model (LLM) workloads.
  • Good Tuning: An extended DFE architecture with eight taps and 1.5mV granularity allows for very precise margin tuning.
  • Advanced Diagnostics: The inclusion of Decision Engine Signal Telemetry and Margining (DESTM) can provide a real-time assessment of signal quality and system-level diagnostics while operating at the higher speeds.

Industry Collaboration and Adoption

Renesas is working with CPU and memory providers to develop and deploy the new RDIMMs. Renesas leads the industry in DDR5 RCDs with a focus on signal integrity and power optimization.

"We are now excited to integrate Gen6 RCD into our DDR5 DIMMs, across multiple SoC platforms to support the growing demands of AI, HPC, and other memory-intensive workloads."

Availability

The newly developed RCD designated RRG5006x is engineered to satisfy next-generation server platform requirements. Currently, Renesas is sampling the RRG5006x RCD to selected customers among which are all major DRAM suppliers. Full availability in production is planned for achieving a mid-2027 launch.
