Samsung Announces HDR10+ Advanced Format with Key Enhancements
Samsung had formally introduced HDR10+ Advanced, which is an updated version of its premium HDR picture format. With this new standard, it is set to provide High Dynamic Range experience with improvements to brightness, tone mapping, motion handling, and color. These benefits are geared toward home theater buffs and gamers alike, and the format is already supported by Amazon's Prime Video Service.
The first HDR10+ format is now completely widespread, with more than 174 partners supporting it, combined with the fact that over 16,000 certified products and countless streaming services have crawled into a substantial audience potentially attracted to this advanced format.
HDR10+ Advanced New Features
On the contrary, with Dolby Vision 2, wherein a two-tier mechanism was applied, HDR10+ Advanced simply has one set of six key improvements accessible to any device implementing this format.
- HDR10+ Bright: This uses extended metadata to allow displays to better render the full tonal range of a scene, producing a consistently bright HDR picture. It is designed to work with novel AI algorithms taking advantage of next-gen TVs with peak brightness of 4,000 or 5,000 nits.
- HDR10+ Genre: Content creators can tag their works by genre (e.g., film, sports). Contingent devices can then use it to optimize tone-mapping and picture processing for that specific type of content.
- HR10+ Intelligent FRC: Motion smoothing allows creators to indicate their desired strength of frame rate interpolation to the display. This can be content type-dependent and can even adapt to changes in ambient lighting conditions.
- HDR10+ Intelligent Gaming: Where tone mapping adjusts in real time based on any changes in the ambient light of the room, ensuring that the view is constantly optimized for the gamer.
- Detailed local tone mapping: With the added benefit of maximizing the number of analysis zones compared to before, more precise brightness control can be exerted over defined areas of the screen on TVs with local dimming. This facilitates better contrast and depth in the image.
- Advanced Color Management: Content creators can send more accurate color information to the television for better accuracy and fidelity in reproducing colors.
A Preview and When It's Expected to Reach Consumers
Samsung has targeted the HDR10+ Advanced for its 2026 lineup of TVs. While a demonstration was shown, it has to be made clear that the demonstration was a simulation in order to show what the improvements would be, rather than the actual format working on an actual display.
If the simulation was a true representation, HDR10+ Advanced should be able to demonstrate a remarkable improvement to average and peak brightness, saturation of color, contrast, and details in shadow areas of a picture. An ultimate decision will be dependant on actually seeing the technology implemented and running on available 2026 televisions.
