BYD Steps Up Warranty Coverage for Batteries of Its Electric Vehicles
The Chinese car manufacturer BYD recently announced an extended warranty for batteries used in electric vehicles with wider coverage applicable to all models of its New Energy Vehicles line, which also includes models already sold to customers.
New Warranty Terms
According to BYD Europe, the changed battery warranty applies for:
- 8 years or 250,000 kilometers, whichever comes first.
Such a change is a considerable extension of the earlier drive terms of 8 years or 160,000 kilometers, but some regions extended this to 200,000 kilometers.
Compare Other Manufacturers
The BYD warranty has now moved to a position much better than many of its immediate competitors. In comparison:
- Tesla (Model 3/Y) 8 years or 100,000 miles (approximately 160,000 km).
- Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Kia generally limit battery warranty cover only to 100,000 miles (approximately 160,000 km).
Therefore, with that little change, the BYD warranty now means nearly 60% more mileage coverage for customers compared to those listed above.
Blade Battery Technology Makes Longer Coverage Possible
The company attributes the warranty extension to Blade Battery technology. These batteries essentially use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) structure known for an extremely long life exceeding 3,000 charge cycles. BYD believes that its batteries can offer a total range of around 1 million kilometers, even after their capacity is reduced to 70% over a long time.
