The Team Fortress 2 Classic MOD Renamed by Valve

The development team of the widespread fan modification known as Team Fortress 2 Classic had announced a compulsory name change of the project as the mod will now be referred to as Team Fortress 2 Classified. This directive comes from Valve regarding the title naming procedures.

Reason for Change

This warning from Valve is as a result of a policy that was put in place sometime in September 2024 that prohibits any fan projects from taking names too similar to any of theirs. In fact, Valve released something earlier called Team Fortress 2 Classic. So to comply with the company's orders but to retain the personality of the project, the developers have dubbed it 'Classified'.

More than Just a Classic

Though originally christened, this MOD does not roll back Team Fortress 2 to an earlier period; rather, it restores content cut or abandoned during the initial game development process. In this sense, it does offer the rare opportunity of nostalgic experience combined with new gameplay elements, as:

  • A 'Civilian' escort game mode.
  • A four-team game mode for much larger combat scenarios.
  • Restored gameplay mechanics like jump pads.
  • New variations of already existing weapons.

Updated Release Date

Release-wise, the project has also undergone significant changes. Initially set for a late 2025 release, the now-reputed nomenclature of Team Fortress 2 Classified will now be played come January 30, 2026.
