Battlefield Development Teams Face Staff Reductions Amidst Strategic Restructuring at EA

The Battlefield development teams at EA will experience staff reductions according to the company's announcement. Electronic Arts has initiated a wave of layoffs impacting its primary Battlefield development organization. The cuts affect employees at several key studios including DICE Criterion Motive Studios and Ripple Effect. The internal documents indicate that the company implements this action because it needs to execute its strategic plan which now emphasizes extended live service operations for Battlefield 6.

The franchise experienced one of its most contradictory years which resulted in both outstanding commercial success and significant layoffs. Battlefield 6 launched in 2025 to record shattering figures selling 7 million copies in its first three days and becoming the top selling title in the United States for the year. The initial momentum after launch has experienced difficulties in retaining its strength throughout the post launch period.

The title reached its maximum player capacity when 747,440 players used Steam at the same time. The latest data indicates that daily player numbers have decreased significantly while current peak values now range between tens of thousands. Users initially showed positive feelings about the game which later turned into negative reviews after they discovered the game included extensive monetization practices and generated AI based cosmetics.

The development teams encounter difficulties in keeping players active despite their success in selling products. The start of Season 2 experienced a delay because movement mechanics had problems and players felt there were no new content updates. The free to play battle royale mode Redsec experiences negative community feedback which has resulted in a "Mostly Negative" response.

EA has indicated that these personnel changes are intended to better align the organization with player feedback and insights gathered from "Battlefield Labs." The company maintains that the franchise remains a top priority even as it streamlines the teams responsible for its ongoing updates.

The organizational shift occurs during a volatile period for EA. Vince Zampella the franchise head recently died following a car accident. EA is currently undergoing an acquisition process by an investment group which includes the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund and Silver Lake and Affinity Partners.

Approximate value of the deal amounts to $55 billion based on the acquisition value. The acquisition process will conclude during the first quarter of the 2027 financial year which runs from April to June 2026. The internal company documents indicate that the current layoffs result from internal restructuring processes instead of the upcoming acquisition of the company.

The Battlefield studios maintain their operational status after the staff reductions which affected all four major teams. EA has published a three month roadmap which will resolve technical problems and rebuild trust with the community. The franchise aims to restore player balance on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S and PC as it enters its next period under fresh management.
