Lexus Transitioning IS Sedan to Full Electric Platform for 2027
Lexus has confirmed that the next generation of the IS sedan will launch in 2027 as a fully electric vehicle. The IS will move into the premium EV segment through this development which replaces all previous internal combustion engines with electric powertrains. The design of the upcoming sedan heavily borrows from the LF ZC concept which creates a futuristic look through its aerodynamic design and departure from standard size boundaries.
The 2027 electric IS will feature a completely new body design that supports its updated battery electric framework. The established specifications show that the vehicle will have a longer and shorter body shape compared to the existing gasoline powered vehicles
- Length 4790 mm
- Width 1880 mm
- Height 1395 mm
The vehicle’s styling is influenced by Lexus's "Next Generation" design language which combines sharp angles with a sleek roofline that first appeared on the LF ZC. This design change aims to boost efficiency while expanding the available space within the cabin.
Lexus plans to offer the electric IS in multiple drive configurations to satisfy both efficiency minded drivers and performance enthusiasts. The highest end models will match the performance of leading electric sedan models which currently exist in the market.
- Drive Options Available in single motor rear wheel drive (RWD) and dual motor all wheel drive (AWD).
- Performance Total output for the AWD version is projected to reach approximately 500 horsepower.
The advanced energy storage system serves as the core component of the 2027 Lexus IS. Lexus aims to achieve a maximum driving distance of 1,000 kilometers which equals 621 miles after charging once. The next generation prismatic batteries create efficient energy storage systems through their advanced design. The high performance cells expand the energy capacity beyond standard EV batteries while maintaining the vehicle's low height of 1395 mm.
Lexus aims to dominate the premium electric sedan market through its creation of the IS EV. The IS delivers 500 horsepower performance and a 1,000 km range which creates a luxurious option for buyers who want something different from typical electric vehicles. The production process will start in 2027 after the company presents additional technical demonstrations which will take place later this year.
