Marathon Devs Stick to Busy UI Despite Player Gripes

Since its launch on March 5 2026 the extraction shooter Marathon has sparked a lot of talk because of its unusual look. The game has gotten many players but some aren't happy with the user interface UI calling it messy and distracting.

During testing and after the full release players have said the Marathon interface is too crowded. Critics in the community have pointed out these problems

  • Too Much to Look At Too many different fonts and colors make it hard to manage what you're carrying
  • Hard to Get Around Some players say the layout makes it harder to make quick choices while playing
  • What People Call It The community calls the menus font slop because they think the design doesn't make sense

Even though many players want a simpler look the dev team says the way it looks now is on purpose. UI designer Elliot Gray talked about these worries on social media saying that while they're working on some tech stuff the busy interface is a style choice they like.

Gray said they still have work to do on how info is laid out and how you move through your inventory. But he made it clear that the main design of the interface will stay the same suggesting the team sees the complex style as a key part of what makes Marathon special.

Marathon came out after some delays caused by feedback from early testers. The delays helped them fix gameplay but the devs have stuck with their vision for the HUD and menus. Since it's an extraction shooter clear info is often needed to survive so keeping a high density UI is a bold move away from what's normal for this type of game.

For players currently in the game these updates are coming soon

  • Easier to Get Around Changes to how players move through inventory screens
  • Better Info Layout Small changes to how data is shown in the current style
  • Same Design No big changes to the colors or fonts

As the community gets used to the game after its release the conflict between players wanting a simple look and the devs wanting a busy style is a key part of what Marathon is in 2026.
