Fraudulent Samsung 990 Pro Storage Drives Surface in Europe Supply Chain Breach and Retail Sector
The European retail sector now faces a dangerous situation because criminals have started to sell counterfeit Samsung 990 Pro products which they developed to resemble actual high end storage devices. ComputerBase community investigators found the problem when a longtime member reported that he had bought counterfeit hardware from an Austrian vendor which he believed to be authentic high end storage products.
The outer packaging of the products showed no visible differences from actual retail products, but inspectors found two small differences that affected print quality and symbol arrangement. The internal components showed that the products contained a blue board instead of the authentic Samsung manufacturing matte black printed circuit board (PCB) which most people expect. The labels contained advanced QR codes together with serial identifiers which demonstrated that designers had put in considerable effort to make the products look like real drives.
Technical diagnostics confirmed the fraud with their final proof. The units showed two types of abnormal behavior when hardware utilities performed analysis, which included their capacity metrics and firmware signatures displaying abnormal values. The official Samsung Magician software identified the drives as 990 Pro units while simultaneously flagging them as non Samsung hardware, rendering the internal diagnostic tools entirely inaccessible. The current version of these clones showed complete inoperability because they could not complete any basic formatting tasks which included operating system installation.
The current spike in fake storage products reflects the ongoing unstable conditions which have affected both the worldwide silicon market and the memory chip industry. Criminals now find it more profitable to spread these fake products because legitimate component prices have increased. The retailer has started an audit to investigate their product distribution methods while their initial inspections of remaining inventory failed to find any additional contaminated items.
Samsung issued a statement to investigative outlets about the incident, which emphasized that customers must buy storage media only from authorized retail partners or official online stores. The company declared that Samsung Magician Software functions as the sole method to determine whether hardware parts are genuine. Samsung has requested users to reach out to official product support teams in case they suspect hardware problems, while the company maintains its strict ban against fake storage solutions which threaten to enter the 2026 market.
