The YouTube development team announced that its mobile accessibility approach will now include picture in picture multitasking as a standard capability which all users can access. The capability was available to paid subscribers only in certain test regions which included the United States. The official platform update states that the tool now functions as a worldwide service which operates on both Android and iOS platforms starting from 2026 to enhance application background task management.
The functionality allows individuals to minimize a video into a floating window that stays visible while other applications are in use. The user can adjust the miniature player by moving it across the screen or resizing it to meet their requirements. The user needs to start playing a video before they can swipe to close the main application for feature activation. The video will automatically transition into the floating window mode allowing for seamless multitasking during mobile sessions. The development team began deployment but warned that it will take several months before the activation reaches all global regions.
Users cannot access all media types through this free tool because of a specific restriction. The announcement clarifies that standard video content is compatible with the new policy but music videos remain excluded for those without a paid membership. The system establishes two separate content sections which include general entertainment and the dedicated music library that requires premium status for both picture in picture and background playback. The core value of the music subscription service stays intact through this strategic restriction which also enhances the usability of the general platform.
Current premium subscribers will see no changes to their existing benefits.
