Scientists Convert Discarded Nokia Phone Batteries Into Sodium Ion Storage Materials To Reduce Electronic Waste And Enhance Sustainable Battery Production

The research partnership between Henan Normal University and Qilu University of Technology has developed a method to change electronic waste into usable battery materials. The team developed sodium ion battery composites by using discarded Nokia mobile phone batteries as their main raw material. The new solution reduces two main industrial problems because it decreases toxic electronic waste and decreases production costs of current power cells.

The engineering team extracted heavy metals from the vintage Nokia power cells and paired them with carbon derived from industrial lignin. The combination first underwent hydrothermal treatment before proceeding to carbonization process. The scientists created a specialized honeycomb structure which features extreme porosity. The three dimensional structure of this material enables faster sodium ion movement when compared to standard storage techniques.

Research laboratories used both laboratory tests and computer simulations to demonstrate that honeycomb framework exhibits better electronic conductivity than other materials. The researchers engineered a material which enables faster sodium ion movement to enable both rapid battery charging and quick energy release. The scientists confirmed that the recycled composite maintains its complete structure during all charging cycles which fulfills a critical requirement for energy products used in commercial markets.

The researchers believe this recycling technique is scalable for several major sectors. The high performance nature of these sodium ion cells makes them suitable for large scale energy storage systems and the electric vehicle market. The material has compact dimensions which researchers plan to use in future portable electronic devices. The project creates a sustainable battery production solution by converting industrial waste into an advanced technology resource.
