Sony Xperia 1 VIII Flagship Officially Revealed With Major Hardware Redesign Advanced AI Camera Integration And Snapdragon 8 Elite Performance
Sony officially announces the Xperia 1 VIII the most significant redesign in both hardware and software that the flagship line has experienced in years. The first pre orders for the device are now live in Europe and Asia, and the first devices are due to ship on June 26, 2026, according to Sony’s press release. Like its predecessors, the new model continues to court the professional space by retaining both the 3.5 mm headphone jack and the dedicated microSD card slot, while opting for the new ORE design language that drops the veteran vertical camera array in favor of a modern squared camera island.
The big new thing with the Xperia 1 VIII is undoubtedly its new camera layout. Gone is Sony’s continuity zoom from the past two iterations, replaced with a focus on light gathering capabilities. The new 70 mm fixed telephoto lens features a 48 MP sensor that is roughly 4 times bigger than that of the Xperia 1 VII, which should deliver impressive low light capability and a better backdrop separation for photos on its 1/1.56” sensor. The main camera is also a 48 MP Exmor T, but on the 24 mm lens, and the 16 mm ultra wide gets a 48 MP sensor too, but the latter can now shoot with an f/2.0 aperture. This year for the first time, Sony brings its professional RAW multi frame processing features to all three rear cameras.
An AI Camera Assistant is now built onto the Xperia Intelligence platform, and it can even analyze scene type and conditions and recommend a particular Creative Look from Sony Alpha for your shot, a neat addition to the phone’s computational photography approach, and is of course optional if you want total manual control over all parameters, including when Sony’s computational camera is used. GSMArena benchmarks show a measurable boost to the screen’s peak outdoor brightness, to a high 1,510 nits, on the 6.5 inch LTPO OLED display, which will also remain a smooth 120 Hz panel, covered by Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Under the hood, the new Xperia flagship runs a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 on 3 nm process. With two Phoenix L cores running up to 4.6 GHz and six Phoenix M cores at 3.62 GHz, it already blows past a 2,312,684 AnTuTu 10 score, which Sony says provides 20 percent improved efficiency compared to the 2025 model. Its NPU handles on device calculations as part of Xperia Intelligence, and is powered by a Processing Optimisation tool to try and spread its 5000 mAh battery over two days of mixed usage. It’s surprising Sony decided to cap wired and wireless charging at 30 W and 15 W respectively, both a bit slow considering other 2026 flagship competitors are offering speeds well above 65 W.
The phone also sees new Full Stage Stereo Speakers, and the entire system has been re engineered for symmetry, which apparently will lead to better soundstaging, and a 25 percent deeper bass range than the 2025 model. The hardware will support Snapdragon Sound, and all relevant standards including aptX Lossless and LE Audio. Professionals will also still appreciate its wireless display and control capability of Sony Alpha cameras from the screen of their Xperia smartphone through the various pre installed software features.
The Xperia 1 VIII comes in three RAM and storage configurations. The baseline device with 12 GB of RAM will start at 1,499 EUR/1,399 GBP, which should come with 256 GB of internal storage. There will be a 512 GB configuration available too, while the top tier 1TB model with 16 GB of RAM can only be purchased through the Sony store in the Native Gold exclusive color. All colors Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, and Garnet Red and configurations will begin shipping out on June 26. It will launch with Android 16 pre installed, with 5 major OS updates and 6 years of security patching committed by Sony. The device is confirmed for release in Europe and Asia but has no official North American release announced as of yet.
