Squadron 42 Cloud Imperium Games Launch Window May Shift To Avoid Direct GTA VI Competition

Squadron 42 Narrative Campaign Facing Potential Delay as Cloud Imperium Games Navigates Grand Theft Auto VI Launch and Billion Dollar Star Citizen Development Ecosystem

There is a chance Cloud Imperium Games will push back the launch window for their heavily anticipated narrative campaign Squadron 42. In a recent interview with ThisWeekinVideogames studio head Chris Roberts mentioned that, though the developer's aim is for an end of year 2026 launch for the title, the imminent release of Grand Theft Auto VI has prompted them to reconsider their target window in order to avoid direct competition with such a huge player in the industry.

First revealed back in 2010 the space simulator already holds the record for one of the longest development cycles in video game history. Roberts previously declared that his new title would draw more interest than the next Rockstar Games release but it appears he's taken a slightly more cautious tone with this latest comment, suggesting that the market is changing at the end of the year and they will need to be more flexible with their final launch date.

Squadron 42 is scheduled for the end of this year but something will happen in the industry by that time. We like other developers must take this into account so I cannot promise that the game will be released on time.

Though the initial target for development was 2014, it has seen several delays in the last 14 years. The game's campaign will boast a high profile Hollywood cast including Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, and Gary Oldman. Thus far the community has put an incredible $1,000,000,000 into developing the single player narrative campaign and the persistent online world of Star Citizen. As one could imagine this has given rise to a large amount of criticism about the financial status of the studio and development progress.

Upon the completion of the narrative campaign, Cloud Imperium Games states they will pour all their attention into the early access build of Star Citizen. Roberts explains that finishing this single player element won't actually mean development of the game is concluded, but rather that it will evolve into a persistent live service where they will continue adding content into the indefinite future. According to the Cloud Imperium Games team this will become a 'living universe'. Roberts states that their end goal is to create simulation of and in physics and simulations of what he calls real physical and simulation realistic planets.

It is difficult to define a roadmap for the release version of Star Citizen because we will never finish working on the game. We will constantly create new content for it because in essence it is a separate living universe. I think our ultimate goal is to model physically and simulation realistic planets.

The pressure will mount on the studio to deliver something concrete after its lengthy decade long development and as 2026 rapidly approaches. This potential avoidance of the Grand Theft Auto VI launch window indicates that Cloud Imperium Games is equally, if not more concerned about commercial reach as it is about technical achievement and there is currently no concrete release window set in stone for Squadron 42.
