Tekken 8 Team Faces Major Leadership Shifts As Director Kohei Ikeda Resigns After Two Decades Following Katsuhiro Harada Exit
The team working on the fighting game Tekken 8 has seen some substantial leadership shifts. Game director Kohei Ikeda has officially resigned from his post at Bandai Namco after a 20 year tenure. Ikeda’s departure marks the second significant blow to the franchise in just under a month, the first being the exit of executive producer Katsuhiro Harada who left the publisher just last month to start up a new development studio under SNK.
Ikeda was the director of both Tekken 7 and Tekken 8, two titles in what many believe is the franchise’s most successful modern run. In a public statement detailing his resignation, Ikeda confirmed that he is not retiring from interactive entertainment and that he is merely leaving to begin designing and developing fighting games for a new company.
In a lengthy statement reflecting on his two decades spent at the publisher, Ikeda took a moment to remember the path that led him to directing flagship IPs from initial project assignments. He offered deep thanks for the creative freedom he experienced during his career.
"Looking back on my 20 years at the company, I remember starting game development on Soulcalibur IV. Later, I had the opportunity to work on the Tekken series, a franchise that heavily influenced my life and one that I always wanted to honor. Working alongside passionate and incredibly talented mentors and colleagues who dedicated themselves to game development remains among my most cherished memories."
Consecutive resignations from two extremely influential names at the helm of Tekken leave a huge gap. Bandai Namco has yet to announce a replacement for executive producer Katsuhiro Harada, and his exit, as well as the current game director Kohei Ikeda’s leaving leaves a question mark hanging over Tekken 8's development pipeline and its future in the competitive fighting game space.
