Apple Siri Redesign for iOS 27 Public Beta Brings Artificial Intelligence to Regular Users

Apple is finally letting the public test drive its massive Siri redesign. The release of the iOS 27 public beta gives regular users their first real look at the updated assistant. Previously, only developers had access. With over 2.5 billion active Apple devices in the wild, even a tiny install rate makes this the biggest trial of Apple consumer artificial intelligence to date.

The voice assistant is trying to catch up to competitors like ChatGPT and Gemini. During the annual developer conference earlier this summer, Apple showed off Siri accessing emails, photos, and messages directly on your device. It can also read whatever is happening on your screen. You can invoke it by swiping down from the Dynamic Island or typing in the Spotlight search bar. Oddly, Apple also gave Siri its own app. For a system that is supposed to be invisible, opening an app to talk to it feels like a step backward.

The system runs on Apple proprietary chipsets using on device processing. Apple built these models by working with Google to distill their Gemini system into a highly efficient package. This is not just a cloned version of Google tech. Apple tuned the models using its own data for better performance. When tasks require more power, the system uses Private Cloud Compute. Your data stays safe. Apple claims none of this information is stored on their servers.

Early testing on developer builds shows some promise but also a few quirks. Siri can easily dig up specific photos or compile summaries of chaotic group chats. But it still stumbles. One tester asked for international news and the assistant tried to look up a contact with a similar name. Bugs are normal for a beta.

If you need a phone that runs without a single glitch, you should probably skip this build and wait for the official autumn release. Otherwise, this is a remarkably stable beta. It is available across almost all Apple hardware, from the Apple Watch to the Vision Pro headset.
