OnePlus Exiting Europe and United States Markets as Oppo Shifts Strategy Amid Silicon Shortage

Bloomberg reports that smartphone maker OnePlus will begin winding down its business in Europe and the United States this week. The exit marks the first phase of a major corporate overhaul by parent company Oppo. By 2027, the brand plans to pull out of all remaining global markets, including its massive consumer base in India. For now, the brand will only sell devices inside China.

Oppo is making these cuts to survive a brutal shift in the global hardware market. The main culprit is a global silicon memory shortage. Over the past year, manufacturers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron shifted their focus to profitable artificial intelligence chips for data centers. This move starved the smartphone industry of memory components, causing LPDDR prices to skyrocket by 250% in a single year. OnePlus built its reputation on offering top tier specifications at budget prices, a strategy that is no longer financially viable. Its popular Nord lineup of affordable phones relied heavily on cheap memory chips that simply do not exist anymore. Industry tracker IDC confirmed the pain is widespread, reporting that Chinese mobile shipments dropped 4.3% year on year in Q2.

The financial strain is only part of the story. Oppo has struggled to gain traction in Western markets, where Apple and Samsung hold a combined duopoly on carrier shelves. OnePlus has consistently lagged behind smaller rivals like Google Pixel and Motorola. The recent launch of the OnePlus 15 was plagued by shipping delays in the United States. Geopolitical tension surrounding Chinese technology imports has also made expansion difficult. To make matters worse, Apple filed a trade secret lawsuit against Oppo, creating a massive legal hurdle for the company.

The reorganization extends far beyond OnePlus. Another Oppo sub brand, Realme, is exiting the competitive Chinese market entirely. Oppo plans to consolidate its resources where it has already found traction. Moving forward, the company will focus its core brand on Central Europe. It will also push Realme devices into the Nordic region, including Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Iceland. This represents a defensive retreat, as Chinese hardware giants choose smaller, safer markets over global domination.

Existing phone owners will not be left completely stranded. According to internal discussions reported by German news outlet winfuture, OnePlus will honor existing warranty agreements. The company plans to provide software updates and technical support until the natural lifecycle of currently active devices ends. However, retail stores are already clearing out remaining inventory. No new hardware will be imported into Europe or the United States, and online stores are rapidly running out of stock.
