Samsung just showed off its latest attempt to solve the biggest headache in foldable phones. Creases are still annoying. The company announced a new display tech called Flex Titanium, which aims to make folding screens flatter, stronger, and far less creased. According to a release shared by Samsung Electronics America, this display design will debut on the upcoming lineup of Galaxy foldables.
Engineers managed to pack 2 different titanium pieces inside the folding screen structure. First, there is a titanium alloy film sitting right under the OLED panel. Samsung says this layer is 20 times stiffer than the plastic films used in older folding phones. To keep the device thin, they rolled this alloy down to just 33% the thickness of a human hair. That is incredibly thin. It supports the display from the inside out.
Directly below the film sits a titanium plate. This is the heavy lifter. The plate uses micro patterned holes to remain flexible while staying tough enough to handle thousands of folds. Samsung Display executive Kyung Jin Yoo explained that these tiny holes allow the metal to bend easily without snapping
. The design also eliminates air gaps between the screen layers. This means you get a more solid feel when you tap the screen.
Power draw is another area getting a quiet upgrade. By swapping out old display materials for new organic ones, Samsung claims the screen is far more power efficient. You get vivid colors and high resolution without destroying your battery life. Sunghoon Moon, a hardware lead at Samsung, pointed out that the goal here was bringing real benefits to everyday users instead of just chasing tech specs. A brighter, flatter screen that uses less juice is exactly what fans have been asking for.
Samsung has a long history with screen innovation. They introduced AMOLED screens to phones almost 2 decades ago and have gone through 7 generations of folding devices since then. This experience shows. Instead of abandoning the foldable design, they are refining the parts that actually matter to buyers. We will see exactly how flat these screens look when Samsung officially launches the next Galaxy Z lineup at their Unpacked event.
