Last Man Standing: A Desperate Fight for Survival in Doom 3

It sounds like a wonderfully desperate fight for survival coming from a mod called "Last Man Standing" brewing. This is not simply another adjustment; it is starting to be a real test of your trigger finger and gut feeling.

Here's what we know about this approaching plunge into madness:

  • Mod Name: Last Man Standing
  • Platinum Arts: The Creators
  • Built on: the foundations of Doom 3
  • Progress Report: They're roughly 70% of the way here.

Your Final, Bloody Encore

Imagine this: you are trapped. Imps are crawling at the door; some slick nightmare is crawling from a ventilation; your pals. They are decorating the floor. It's just you, a few shells, and a whole dimension of monsters wishing to contact you. That's the essence of Last Man Standing. Platinum Arts, the developers, are creating tight, stifling environments where the evil tide is unyielding rather than simply modifying current maps. The aim is not, strictly speaking, to win but rather to observe how long you can resist the unavoidable. Michael Tomaino, the mod leader, says, "We're trying to instill panic in the players," and you can almost hear the wicked grin.

You don't have to die alone (necessarily).

Though the solo adventure sounds shockingly entertaining, you will also be able to pull your friends into this waking nightmare. Although co-op play is a major draw, don't count on it to get simpler. Tomaino cautions, "We'll add more monsters to the map depending on how many players there are." Thus, more friends equal more targets for the hellspawn.

They are bringing back an old buddy, the double-barreled shotgun beefed up for the event, to assist you fight back (for a little bit, at least). And if that isn't sufficient, what about a "plasmathrower". Tomaino defines it as "a flamethrower that launches bursts of blue plasma," sounding chaotic. In an appropriate way.

It's not all only mindless shooting.

You'll have access to "hack" doors to seal them off and establish short chokepoints. The others will have to defend their teammate as demons beat against the barricade while one player struggles desperately to weld a door shut. Picture those iconic Aliens film sequences; you are heading right here. You can even deploy sentry bots and turrets to help stem the tide.

How would you want to leave.

Simple survival and the elimination of a fixed number of a certain terrible species define the main game mode, solo or cooperative. There is more, though. In the competitive style, the beasts keep coming endlessly and the last player still alive wins. If that isn't enough, the team is also looking at a "suicide mission" mode in which players, strapped with a ticking bomb, aim for the maximum kill count before they eventually detonate.

Death is an inevitability in Last Man Standing. This mod is all about embracing the chaos and facing your death with a shotgun in hand and a maniacal smile, so the real question is how dramatically you would go out.
