Galaxy S25 Ultra: Rumored Camera Upgrades for Ultrawide and 3x Telephoto Sensors

The newest rumor from Weibo tipster Ice Universe confirms that the Galaxy S25 Ultra will have the quad-camera arrangement but will see long-awaited enhancements to the ultrawide sensor and the 3x camera, with both units gaining 50 MP, up from 12 MP and 10 MP, respectively. This rumor contradicts previous ones that suggested a triple-camera module on the S25 Ultra.

Rumours about the camera module of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra have spread quickly over the previous month. A few (lesser-known) tipsters reported that a triple-camera module would replace the current quad-camera module, but these were contradicted by others, notably Ice Universe, who has now provided some intriguing new information.

According to a Weibo post, Ice Universe promises that both the ultrawide and 3x telephoto cameras will eventually be upgraded to 50 MP sensors. The ultrawide device now employs a 12 MP sensor, while the 3x camera has a 10 MP sensor. Both units have been untouched since the S21 Ultra, and many believe that the somewhat obsolete sensors are a major flaw in an otherwise excellent camera arrangement.

It's worth noting that because both of these cameras are identical to the Galaxy S24 Ultra's smaller brothers, the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+, any upgrade will be evident across the S25 family.

Meanwhile, the main camera and 5x lens are expected to maintain their present 200 MP and 50 MP sensors, respectively. With the other two also receiving resolution upgrades, pixel binning techniques should enable the S25 Ultra to deliver greater low-light performance consistently across the focal length range, at least on paper.

Zooming between fixed focal lengths is always problematic because the phone largely disguises digital zoom as continuous optical zoom (with the Sony Xperia 1 V being an exception). That should be enhanced with a higher resolution sensor, as could macro performance if Samsung decides to reduce the 3x shooter's close-focusing distance.

We may expect additional stories of different veracity concerning the S25 Ultra's cameras and other specifications, but this one, if genuine, will be greatly appreciated by Samsung aficionados.
