God of War Creator Criticizes Reboot Again, Calls Characters "Boring"
Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception from fans, the God of War reboot, featuring a more mature and fatherly Kratos, continues to face criticism from some, including the creator of the original games.
Game designer David Jaffe has once again expressed his disapproval of the franchise's new direction. He's previously voiced concerns about the revamped Kratos, finding him too soft and lacking the rage that defined the character. While acknowledging that this approach could have worked if the intention was to eventually transition the protagonist role from Kratos to Atreus, Jaffe believes Kratos' son falls short as a replacement, finding him uninteresting both visually and in terms of gameplay.
This time, Jaffe's sentiment finds support in Days Gone director John Garvin, who shares the view that the God of War franchise took a wrong turn – similar to Uncharted after Drake's marriage. Garvin argues that characters like Drake and Kratos, much like their Marvel counterparts, should remain largely unchanged for their stories to continue resonating with audiences.
