Update: Steam Store page is Back Online After almost 4 Hour and the Steam Community pages, Steam Web APIs and Online services still down waiting for fix
Steam Service is hit by a massive outage
Currently, Valve's steam platform is badly experiencing an outage that's preventing users from opening the store, connecting to servers, and playing online games. The problem hit on Christmas Eve, smack in the middle of the annual Winter Sale on the platform.
Scope and Impact of the Disruption
The reported outage seems to have spread out across several core components of a normally operational service on Steam. The official Steam Status page joined with the likes of nonofficial third-party trackers, namely SteamDB, have both rated significant services as offline due to this occurrence. The impacted services include:
- The Steam Store website
- Steam Community pages
- Steam Web APIs
- Online services for Valve games, including Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2
- The Steam mobile applications
User Reports Indicate a Major Issue
Outage tracking site DownDetector registered a massive spike in user reports growing beyond 14,000, later climbing above the currently cited 38,000, and into the realms of over 60,000 reports of individual users within hours. The most repeated reason posited by users to explain their outage-like experience is failure to contact the server.
No Official Statement from Valve
At the time, Valve hadn't publicly identified the issue or given an estimated time to fix it. The current disruption is just the latest in a line of major outages for Steam, including one that took place last October and lasted for about one hour.
