PS5 Pro Upscaler Issues Explained: Older Versions Causing Problems

Some PS5 Pro games are using an older, less effective version of the PSSR upscaler, leading to subpar image quality.

The PlayStation 5 Pro's AI-powered PSSR upscaler isn't performing optimally in all games due to some titles using an older version of the technology. This has led to noticeable differences in image quality between various PS5 Pro enhanced games.

PS5 Pro Upscaler Issues Explained: Older Versions Causing Problems

Developer "Koralsky" explained on ResetERA that games like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, built on Unreal Engine 4 and using SDK 9, couldn't implement the latest upscaler version (which requires SDK 10 or higher). As a result, these games may be using the earliest version of PSSR, contributing to the less-than-ideal image quality.

While specific details about the different PSSR versions remain undisclosed, Koralsky confirmed that image quality improvements are expected in future batches of PS5 Pro supported games. They cited a current project using a later PSSR version (though not the latest) that delivers noticeably better results than TSR and FSR. This suggests the upscaler's performance will improve significantly over the next 6-12 months.
