The openSUSE Linux distribution has announced built-in GPU switching across all its distributions, thanks to a new tool called switcherooctl. This eliminates the need for third-party tools and promises a smoother multi-GPU experience for gamers and other users.
Switcherooctl: A Better Way to Switch
Previously, openSUSE users relied on tools like suse-prime, bbswitch, and bumblebee for GPU switching, often encountering driver issues, performance problems, and compatibility headaches. switcherooctl aims to solve these problems, offering multi-GPU support on boot for both GNOME and KDE Plasma environments.
Key benefits of switcherooctl include:
- Improved system and gaming performance
- Enhanced power management for laptops
- Cross-vendor support for AMD, Intel, and Nvidia GPUs
- Seamless integration into openSUSE
- Support for both Wayland and Xorg systems
The openSUSE team recommends discontinuing the use of third-party GPU switching tools in favor of switcherooctl for a more stable and reliable experience on modern systems.
