A New Nintendo Switch Update 20.0.0 Hints at Future Hardware
A new system update, version 20.0.0, arrived just now. While updates are usually minor adjustments, this one appears particularly significant, adding a few features that appear to be clearly designed with future hardware – the rumored Nintendo Switch 2, maybe – in mind.
Introducing Virtual Game Cards
Virtual game libraries just received a cosmetic facelift. Now your digitally bought software, including DLC and even some free software downloads, will appear as "virtual game cards" within a special list. It's a pleasant way to keep your collection neat.
But the true trickery herein is the functionality these virtual cards provide:
- You can "virtually load" and "eject" these digital licenses among up to two separate Nintendo Switch consoles linked to your account.
- Even better still, you can share these digital game cards with other members in your Nintendo Account family group. Sharing is caring, after all.
Uncovering GameShare Capabilities
Here's a feature that seems straight linked to future hardware. The update introduces "GameShare," allowing compatible software to be shared from a (presumably, future) Switch 2 console with other local consoles for local multiplayer gaming.
- Keep in mind, this is strictly for local wireless play introduced by the Switch 2 hardware.
- Surprisingly, this specific GameShare function isn't compatible between two current Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite units. That roughly means that it's a transition to new features with the next generation.
Better Security and More Flexibility
Nintendo has also added some convenient access and security features. There's a new User Verification option that lets you lock the Virtual Game Card menu with a PIN or through a Nintendo Account login. And "Online License Settings" let you play your bought games and DLC just by having an internet connection, even if you don't have the virtual game card "loaded" onto that specific console. That's some welcome flexibility!
Smooth Save Data Transfer
Worry about carrying over your game progress to a new future console? Relax! The update also includes functionality to transfer the save data between existing Nintendo Switch systems and the upcoming Switch 2. System transfers can be done through local communication, but both local and server-based transfers require an internet connection and a Nintendo Account.
What if you need to get rid of your current Switch *first* before you can get the new one? Don't worry about it! You can upload your system transfer data to a special server so that you can restore it on your Switch 2 later. But take note: this will reset your current Switch to its factory settings. So only do this if you know you'll do the transfer on the new console soon. Nintendo recommends you use local transfer *after* you buy your Switch 2 if you're going to play on your current system until then.
Looking Ahead
This v20.0.0 update is reminiscent of Nintendo laying groundwork. Such enhancements as GameShare that *only* work using a future platform, and the focus on streamlined digital library maintenance and save data transfer, all strongly indicate preparation is well under way for the next in the Nintendo line. It's good to be a Nintendo fan!
