Asus Unveils ROG Strix OLED Monitors with "TrueBlack Glossy" Finish
Asus is making its way into the gaming monitor market, and if you're an aficionado of smoothness and deep colors, you'll want to hear this. They just pulled back the curtain on not one but two new 32-inch ROG Strix OLED gaming monitors, and they're packing some serious heat, including a new "TrueBlack Glossy" finish that promises a true immersive experience.
ROG Strix XG32UCWG: The Speed Demon with a Glossy Sheen
Taking the lead is the ROG Strix XG32UCWG, a monitor that seems specifically engineered for hardcore competitive gamers who settle for nothing less than the absolute best. What's all the hype about? It's built around an LG Display Gen 3 WOLED panel, and it doesn't mince words about what it can do.
The big news here, besides its incredible speed, is Asus's new "TrueBlack Glossy" coating. Gamers have long wished for glossy OLED display panels, such as those you find on flagship TVs, and not the usual matte or semi-gloss finishes. Asus claims this new coat creates a "zero-haze" experience, or very deep blacks and rich colors without that unpleasant dulling effect matte coatings are known to give. It's a visual game-changer, at least if history with previous "glossy" efforts is any indicator.
Performance-wise, the XG32UCWG is a beast:
- It natively displays in a gorgeous 4K resolution with an extremely smooth 240 Hz refresh rate.
- Wait, there's more! Thanks to LG's Dual Mode feature, you can switch it over to a 1080p mode that kicks up the refresh rate to a mind-bending 480 Hz. Talk about silky smooth!
- Be on the lookout for staggering brightness, maxing out at 1,300 nits, and breathtakingly fast 0.03 ms GtG response times.
For connections, you're covered with:
- 1x DisplayPort 1.4
- 2x HDMI 2.1
- 2x USB Type-A ports
- 1x USB Type-C port (offering 15W power delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode)
Asus has not dropped the cat in the bucket in terms of pricing or exactly when we get our hands on this treasure, but the specifications are enough to make anyone thrill for themselves.
ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWMG: Yet Another Glossy Contender with Dual Modes
Marrying the XG32UCWG is its twin, the ROG Strix OLED XG32UCWMG. This 32-inch display also boasts that same new "TrueBlack Glossy" finish, seeking to rid the screen of haze and allow those OLED blacks to shine with full effect, even in a well-lit room.
As with its twin, the XG32UCWMG also features a WOLED panel from LG Display and ingeniously uses LG's Dual Mode technology. What that translates to is you getting versatility in how you want to play games:
- Enjoy stunning 4K visuals at silky-smooth 165 Hz.
- Or switch to 1080p to get the maximum frame rates and experience a lightning-fast 330 Hz.
Asus also talked about a handy feature called Aspect Ratio Control, where you can essentially shrink the panel to emulate a 24.5-inch or 27-inch screen if that's what you're accustomed to for some games.
The "TrueBlack Glossy" coating is described by Asus as being a marriage of zero-haze optical coating and a high-end anti-reflective stack. The idea is to keep those rich blacks in top condition no matter the ambient light. If you've had it with being able to have maximum image quality only when watching in a darkened room, this could be the solution.
Connectivity is on a par with its sibling, offering:
- One DisplayPort 1.4 port
- Two HDMI 2.1 ports
- A USB Type-A port pair
- A 15W charging and DisplayPort Alt Mode USB Type-C port
The display also features peak brightness of up to 1,300 nits and is VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black certified. Price and release details are not yet known but it's shaping up to be another compelling option for OLED enthusiasts.
It's evident Asus is breaking boundaries with these new ROG Strix monitors, particularly with their dedication to an actual glossy OLED experience. Stay tuned for more news as it becomes available.
