Huawei MateBook Fold: A Truly Head-Turning Foldable Computer

Huawei moves ahead with something that's truly head-turning: the MateBook Fold. Not another laptop, mind you - Huawei's making a splash in the world of foldable computers, and it comes with some serious hardware, including its own HarmonyOS 5.

A Display That Bends the Rules (Literally)

The star of this show is decidedly its screen. Imagine a massive 18-inch tandem OLED display that, when you need to make a move, folds neatly back into a smaller 13-inch form. We're discussing 3.3K resolution (3296 x 2472 pixels) with an eye-blinding peak brightness level of as much as 1600 nits. And that features 1440Hz PWM dimming and a mind-blowing 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. That's a visual banquet, whether you're working or playing.

Formed to Impress, Made to Last

Huawei has obviously gone to some lengths to come up with the design for MateBook Fold. MateBook Fold is heavy at 1.16 kg, but when unfolded is just 7.3mm thick, only increasing to 14.9mm when folded. They have apparently created a custom "water drop" hinge specifically for this fold form factor to allow the device to sustain its angle between 30 and 150 degrees. For added convenience, there's even a built-in kickstand, perfect for propping it in landscape mode.

Under the Hood and All Around

While Huawei hasn't officially labeled the processor, it's usually assumed to be one of their Kirin chips, similar to other MateBooks. What we do know is that it features loads of 32GB of RAM and options for either 1TB or 2TB of speedy SSD storage.

Connectivity and features include:

  • Bluetooth 5.2 and dual-band Wi-Fi for wireless needs.
  • Two USB-C ports for peripherals and charging.
  • A fingerprint reader stylishly integrated into the power button for security.
  • An 8MP front camera for video chats.
  • A stunning audio combo with six speakers and four mics.
  • A large 74.69Wh battery to power everything.

Typing Your Way

Concerned about typing on a foldable. Yes, there is a virtual keyboard, but Huawei actually includes a physical keyboard with the MateBook Fold too. That keyboard is incredibly thin at just 5mm, weighs a lightweight 290 grams, offers 1.5mm travel on the keys, and even comes with a battery of its own that can last up to 24 days. Of course, you can always plug in your preferred Bluetooth keyboard and mouse if you wish.

What Else is in the Box

Other than the keyboard and laptop, Huawei includes a 140W power adapter, braided cable, screen cleaning cloth, and even two bags – one large for the computer and one small for accessories. Package deal, essentially.

Price and Availability (For Now)

The MateBook Fold comes in Black, Blue, and White. In terms of price, the 1TB model is CNY23,999 (around $3,328 USD), while the 2TB model is CNY26,999 (around $3,745 USD). That puts it in a premium tier, more expensive than other foldable computers on release. It is only available currently in China, with pre-order open and availability in June 6th.

The Huawei MateBook Fold really does make a big splash. It's a hopeful piece of tech that promises a future where our devices are more malleable and resourceful than ever. Only time will decide whether this foldable dream really takes off, but it's hard to deny that it's thrilling to see happen.
