The new report indicates that Apple is working on something called 'metalens' technology. The big deal? If this technology makes it into the iPhone 17 lineup, that could mean a much smaller Face ID sensor-whhich could result in a much smaller Dynamic Island!
At first, rumors suggested that this fancy metalens technology would be available only to the top-of-the-line iPhone 17 Pro Max. It seems that Apple might consider a more widespread rollout. Remember how Dynamic Island became standard with iPhone 15-the same thing sounds like metalens for the iPhone 17 family.
Analyst Jeff Pu from GF Securities is the one who makes this prediction. His latest research note, which was picked up by 9to5Mac, conveys that there shall not be one but all four models under the iPhone 17 brand that would receive this space-saving technology upgrade.
If this becomes the case, then probably the whole iPhone 17 line-up will have the more compact Dynamic Island. This is good for an even better screen-to-body ratio-more screen, less cutout! Luckily, the hollering in resources we have gotten used to from the Dynamic Island, which resizes when different apps alert, is not expected to change.
Surprisingly, Pu commented on all other specifications for iPhone 17 as well. He mentioned that iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air would have 8GB RAM. However, his updated note claims that only the base iPhone 17 model is going to feature that much memory and that it might stick with the older A18 chip, the same expected in the iPhone 16 series.
Now, before we go too far, it's essential to keep in mind that it is still early days. Apple launches are always somewhat undefined, and analysts do not always predict well. Jeff Pu is no exception to that mixed track record.
Therefore, while it sounds good that a Dynamic Island would shrink in size, the best thing to do is to accept the information with a grain of salt. Meanwhile, we will continue listening for more updates.
