Apple is reportedly testing a massive 7 inch display for a future flagship smartphone. The experimental panel keeps the same design proportions as the current iPhone 17 Pro Max but stretches the physical diagonal to 6.96 inches. However, this giant screen is only planned for the 20th anniversary model scheduled to debut in 2027.
Well known insider Digital Chat Station shared the leak on the social network Weibo. The tipster claims that Apple is actively preparing a screen prototype that pushes past current hardware limits. This experimental display features curved glass on all 4 sides with almost zero border space. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman previously backed this up by reporting that Apple is currently designing 2 separate versions of the celebratory device.
Apple seems to be saving the bigger screen format exclusively for the 2027 milestone. The upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models are rumored to stick with their current displays. These devices will measure 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches. This means buyers will have to wait for the 20th anniversary edition to get the extra screen space.
Apple has a long history of slowly inflating its hardware dimensions. The original model shipped with a tiny 3.5 inch screen. Over the years that size grew to 4 inches, then jumped to 4.7 and 5.5 inches for the early plus size models. Premium editions eventually hit 6.5 inches, then 6.7 inches, before the company reached the current 6.9 inch limit with the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Pushing the screen to nearly 7 inches marks the next phase in this evolutionary design.
