Virtua Fighter News: New Game Teased & VF5 R.E.V.O. Coming to Consoles
SEGA and the good folks at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (the same folks who bring you Yakuza) had some massive news for the legendary Virtua Fighter series during their VF Direct 2025 Spring event. We've got not one, but two exciting bits of information.
A New Virtua Fighter is on the Way
That's right, a whole new entry in the Virtua Fighter franchise has been officially teased. While they're not revealing the title or release date just yet, SEGA did reveal some intriguing shifts in direction. Expect a Virtua Fighter with a heavy emphasis on story and character development – something the franchise hasn't really placed much emphasis on before.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is lending its storytelling expertise. Expect to see a richer insight into the lives and motivations of the fighters. Why do they fight in the tournament. What's their background like. We're finally going to learn.
To provide us with a sneak peek, they revealed a redesigned Wolf Hawkfield. The retro wrestler looks grizzlier, bearded, and sans his trademark ponytail. This redesign indicates the studio's effort to modernize the legacy characters without altering their core persona.
Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is Breaking Free
Remember Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., the revised version that dropped on Steam a few months back. Console players, your wait is almost up. SEGA revealed it's officially coming to:
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series S and X
- Nintendo Switch 2
And it's not a simple port, either. Responding directly to fan requests, this multi-platform release will include two massive inclusions:
- Cross-Play Support: Battle against friends and rivals regardless of their console.
- Rollback Netcode: Expect a much smoother online experience, identical to the Steam version.
SEGA also promised that this console release will get even more content down the line, so it'll be so much more than just a port. That's great news for helping the VF5 community continue to thrive on all platforms.
The Future is Looking Good for VF
With a narrative-mode centered new installment and an upgraded, cross-play enabled VF5 R.E.V.O. on the horizon, the future of Virtua Fighter is more promising than ever. We'll be keeping our ears open for more details on the new game's title, release window, and which other characters will be making their return.
