The Kubuntu Focus M2 laptop from the previous model, known for its high gaming and large task performance, is likely to restart a significant renovation. The newer Gen 6 model gets better, taking advantage of the most advanced hardware. However, it is also expensive now.
The new Kubuntu Focus M2 packs a brilliant screen of 16 inches, featuring a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and a stunning 240Hz refresh rate. Arrows came up with a new Ultra this time and designed the Intel Core i9 275HX "Arrow Lake" with nothing less than the graphics unit of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070.
The power is worth another penny. The previous year saw the Gen 5 version with a starting price of $1895 while the new Kubuntu Focus M2 Gen 6 edition starts with a higher price pre-orders at $2895. Shipping is foreseen to start around the middle of June.
What has come does not stop at the price hike; in the starting default configuration, the Gen 6 includes 32 GB of RAM, 1 TB of SSD, and now RTX 5070. The previous one presented 16-GB RAM, 500 GB SSD, and 4060 RTX. The 2025 Gen 6 has already raised the bar for the entry.
For those who decide to become all the more insatiable, it is possible to upgrade up to 96GB of memory at DDR5-5600. In storage, the laptop can support expansion reaching up to 12TB from one PCIe Gen 5 M.2 slot plus another two onboard PCIe Gen 4 M.2 slots. Surely, the cost of the original units will rise from these upgrades.
The Kubuntu Focus M2 Gen 6 brings an 80Wh battery, not to be charged with less than a 230W power adapter. For cooling, it uses a two-fan system that's backed by equally solid aluminum extrusion for the deck and display housing. A numeric keypad sits center-staged in the package as regards a keyboard lit with RGB-LEDs.
More elements of distinction in the M2 Generation 6 might be:
- Intel's BE200 wireless card (Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4)
- 5MP webcam with a physical privacy shutter
- Stereo 2W speakers
- Comprehensive I/O options include:
- 1 x HDMI 2.1b
- 2 x Thunderbolt 4
- 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A
- 1 x 3.5mm audio jack
- 1 x 2.5 GbE LAN port
- 1 x microSD card reader
The laptop measures 14" x 10.7" x 0.8" (356mm x 271mm x 20mm) and has a weight of about 5 lbs (2.25 kg). As its name suggests, the laptop ships with the latest Long-Term Support (LTS) version of Kubuntu Linux, complete with the KDE Plasma desktop environment.
