Mortal Shell 2, the much-awaited sequel, made a striking entrance this morning, starting the Summer Game Fest 2025 with pure-action trailers. The indie guys from Cold Symmetry along with PlayStack as the publisher seem all set to brew another dose of their unique take on the genre.
For fans of the first, of course, one would expect that Mortal Shell 2 is not just a remaster of things past. According to the creators, this sequel will be a "broadening" of everything we loved (and probably died to a lot of) in the original. They promise:
- Combat Unleashed Prepare for "unrestricted, adrenaline-charged combat." Something tells us things are going to get even more frantic and fluid.
- Weapons Yours to Select Anticipate "deeper weapon design with extensive upgrade options." This could imply a hell of a lot more in terms of customization and strategy in how you go about dealing with your foes.
- Explore to Your Hearts Content A new "emphasis on free exploration." Lets hope this means even more hauntingly beautiful yet dangerous environments to wander off in.
The shell mechanism of inhabiting the bodies of fallen warriors to gain their unique fighting styles and abilities was one of the strongest features that differentiated the first Mortal Shell from anything else. Happily, that game-changing premise is still very much alive in Mortal Shell 2. So prepare to once again inhabit various shells, master their unique combat methods, and explore their secrets.
The trailer has certainly got the hype train rolling, and it looks like Cold Symmetry is looking to build even more upon the solid foundation that was the first game for a deeply immersive and challenging Soulslike. We are very much looking forward to seeing more.
