New facts show Tesla is set to roll out a six-seat choice for its Model Y electric SUV. It was once thought to be only for China, but code in Tesla's firmware now hints this big version might sell all over the world.
First hints from folks at Tesla's Giga Shanghai plant talked about plans for a six-seat Model Y. Now, bits of code in Tesla's latest firmware back up these talks and hint at a launch not just in China. Despite six-seat family SUVs with big chairs being big in China, Tesla might aim to push this setup in other places too.
Right now, Tesla's key pick for big families is a seven-seat Model Y, which has two small seats at the back. A new six-seat model with more comfy seats for each person could draw in different buyers. This is much like the Model X, which has a few ways to set up seats, with a luxe six-seat option having big chairs and a walkway.
The six-seat choice in the Model X is the priciest inside choice, adding $6,500 due to these fancy seats. The planned 2026 Model X update, with a bit bigger body, may give better legroom in the back seats.
Tesla might use a plan like with the Model Y six-seater, maybe with a longer base to fit four big seats in the front and middle rows and two more at the back. With new ways to fold seats in the Model Y, the six-seat setup could also have smart ways to move and adjust seats.
This layout would likely boost comfort for up to five grown-ups, giving each a chair with an armrest and lots of space for legs, even in the far back seats.
