AMD Confirms Higher Costs for US-Made Chips from TSMC Arizona
AMD's leader, Dr. Lisa Su, says chips made in TSMC Arizona cost more than those from Taiwan. In a talk with Bloomberg, she said these chips are 5% to 20% pricier. This is a cost AMD will take to make a strong supply link.
Why They Pay More Stable over Cheap
Dr. Su shared that the health crisis showed how much we need strong supply links. AMD now thinks about more than just low prices. They think about strong and steady supply. She said US chips will cost "a bit more," but tax cuts help. Over all costs, AMD thinks the extra price is "a very smart choice for us to have US making and strength."
TSMC Arizona Working and Wanted
The Arizona site of TSMC has started to make 4nm chips, and they work as well as the ones from Taiwan. The costs to make wafers there are said to be about 10% more. Yet, buyers want these US chips a lot, and they are all taken till late 2027.
More Companies Choose US Chips
Dr. Su said AMD will get chips from the Arizona place by year-end. This puts AMD with big names like Apple and even its rival, Nvidia, in buying US chips. This is a key win for the US goal to get more chip making done at home, even if costs are a bit high.
