New 20% Vietnam Tariff May Up Nintendo Switch 2 Cost
A new deal President Trump made with Vietnam is about to put a 20% tariff on all goods from there. This move could push up the cost of the Nintendo Switch 2, as the game box is made in Vietnam and Nintendo was counting on a smaller tariff.
An Uncertain Tariff Time for Nintendo
The tariff game has been all over the place. First, they talked about a 46% tariff on goods from Vietnam, then put it on hold and cut it to 10% for 90 days. PCMag says Nintendo used this 10% number to guess its money plans, making the new 20% tariff a big problem for its budget.
Big Sales but a Tricky Start
The Nintendo Switch 2 kicked off strong, selling 3.5 million units first weekend out. Yet, its April 2, 2025 launch hit at the same time as Trump's “Liberation Day” tariffs got told. This threw a bit of doubt on the console's $449 start price.
Nintendo kept the $449 tag for pre-orders, which began April 24, by using the 90-day tariff break that started April 9. This break, though, did not stop small price jumps on Switch 2 extras.
Possible Price Jump from $450 to $500
Nintendo might not soak up the 10% tariff as it might with the new 20% rate. If this tariff kicks in, the company might have to pass the extra cost to buyers. This could make the Nintendo Switch 2's price jump from its now $449 to about $500.
Right now, no final paper is out saying when or if the 20% tariff will start. Nintendo seems to be waiting for a last word before they share any news on a price shift. Even with good first sales, buyers from other countries have seen short supplies, and for this, company head Shuntaro Furukawa has said sorry to the owners.
