New Nintendo Switch 2 Stops Most Non-Brand USB-C Gear

Reports by Sean Gaullister from The Verge show that the new Nintendo Switch 2 won't work with a lot of other-brand docks and gears. It seems to use secret codes and a special check system that stops non-brand gear from working. This has hit big gear makers hard.

The Tech Wall

Checks on the USB-C Power setup in the console showed that the Switch 2 sends messages that other-brand docks can't read. It likely does this with a special chip that looks for a key from the gear it's hooked to before it lets features like the video show.

Impact on Gear Use

Many gear-makers are feeling this change. The main problems are:

  • Making Stopped: Big other-brand makers like Jsaux have stopped making their Switch 2 gear.
  • Docking Issues: Most non-brand docks won't work with the Switch 2, except for the Antank S3 Max. Its maker says it can see Nintendo's special key.
  • Limits on Other Items: This block also stops items like the Xreal augmented reality glasses from working unless they have a new adapter. Xreal says they are making a fix.

Might Be Trying To Avoid Damage

Some say this move helps Nintendo stop damage from bad or weak gear. While this could keep the Switch 2 safe, it forces users to only buy Nintendo gear.

This goes against the main idea of the USB Type-C, which is meant to work with all gear. By putting in this block, Nintendo limits players' choices in using various third-party USB-C items. Nintendo has yet to speak on using secret codes or gear checks.
