NVIDIA Rolls Out Smooth Motion Tech for RTX 40 GPUs
NVIDIA has brought in its "Smooth Motion" tech for RTX 40 series GPUs within the latest 590.26 preview drivers. This part is made to add an extra frame between two frames made, which can make the frame rate in games seem twice as high.
How Smooth Motion Acts
Much like AMD's Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF), NVIDIA's Smooth Motion is set at the software level. This says it doesn't need direct work from game makers and can run with games that don't use NVIDIA's DLSS Frame Generation tech.
How it Works and Current Status
This part is now ready on NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace (RTX 40 series) GPUs, but it can’t yet be turned on right from the "NVIDIA App". Based on what users say on the Guru3D forums, Smooth Motion can be turned on using the NVIDIA Profile Inspector tool as a quick fix.
Tests show big jumps in how well it works. One user said that turning on Smooth Motion in World of Warcraft raised their frame rate from 82 FPS to 164 FPS, showing a clear double in how well it works with just a simple switch.
When to Use and What to Know
Smooth Motion does well in some spots, but it's key to know what it can do right now and its limits.
- Preview Phase: The driver is a preview, and users have noted it does not always work right. It's best to wait for a full, stable release for a clean run.
- Best for: The tech works well for old apps with no DLSS help, for games held back by the CPU, or for games stuck at a low frame rate.
- Looks: The rise in FPS from Smooth Motion does not mean the game looks just as good. The tech is simpler than full DLSS work, and small flaws in how it looks may pop up at times.
For those who want the top frame rate, Smooth Motion brings a strong new option that can lift how well games run by a lot.
